The Chilean government confirms that the Chile-China Express submarine cable project is still in the administrative phase

The government of Chilean President José Antonio Kast keeps the Chile-China Express submarine cable project underway, intended to connect Valparaíso with Hong Kong. The Minister of Public Works and Telecommunications, Louis de Grange, confirmed that the initiative, inherited from Gabriel Boric's government, is still in the administrative evaluation phase.

“The Chinese cable issue is following its normal course,” he said in an interview with CNN Chile, explaining that authorities were gathering information and had asked the company some questions as part of the concession request.

The project has been at the center of tensions with the United States. Last March 11, the US ambassador in Santiago, Brandon Judd, stated that "the Chinese cable project was now over", while Washington had already taken measures against three officials of the previous Chilean government linked to the affair. De Grange reiterated that Chile, the United States and China are strategic partners and that Santiago will maintain relations with both.
