Ione Belarra accuses the Government of turning Ceuta into a "large open-air prison"

The general secretary of Podemos, Ione Belarra, accused the Government this Saturday of turning Ceuta into a "large open-air prison" and of being "digging its own grave" there out of "fear of Morocco", convinced that that country "perhaps has too much information from the president" of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez.

This was stated by Belarra during her speech at the meeting of the Podemos State Citizen Council, in which she regretted that the Government has caused a "terrible humanitarian crisis with its calculated inaction" in the autonomous city, turning Ceuta into "a large open-air prison" by "thinking that it is punishing migrants, Morocco."

"But in Ceuta, the so-called socialist government is digging its own grave," he warned, asserting that its members behave this way "because they are afraid of Morocco and do not want to break relations with a totalitarian country that violates human rights" and because "perhaps they have too much information about the president and we want them to continue doing the most violent and dirtiest work on the borders."

In his opinion, what was experienced this summer in Ceuta "concentrates everything that is wrong in the world; all the racism, all the inequality, all the abuse of power."

After remembering that more than 180 people lost their lives trying to reach Spain, he said that "no one talks about them, no one names them." "We don't even know their names, who they were, their families," he added, while wondering if "anyone can imagine a plane accident in which the passengers remained unidentified a month later, buried without knowing their identity, without their families being able to say goodbye to them with dignity."

"No one imagines it and this is only accepted because we live in a deeply racist society, which considers that black and Moorish lives do not matter," he denounced, while calling on society to "not lose empathy" and to have "memory and humanity" because those people "could be our daughters, our brothers, our parents," given that Spain "is a country of exile, emigration and pain."

In this context, he stated that he does not want to "live in a country in which there are pogroms, real hunts for migrants" and he questioned how to explain to the little ones that "people who are like their friends, like their classmates, are held on a beach at 40 degrees without food, without shelter, without health care", something that he considered "absolutely unbearable."

"No one gets on a boat, unless the boat is safer than what they leave behind. No one would be forced to leave their country if it were not for the fact that the West has plundered the resources of those southern countries for centuries," she pointed out, convinced that "capitalism and the economic elites of our country want these people to migrate like this, work like this, dying, working in conditions of semi-slavery so that the wheel can continue turning and that the unjust and unequal system in which we live continues to function."

In this regard, he defended that, "if Morocco can do this today, it is because yesterday we allowed Israel to commit genocide without anyone lifting a finger." "Today all the friends of the United States around the world, and Morocco is one, think that they can do whatever they want, like trying to keep Ceuta to control the Strait of Gibraltar, because they have the United States behind them," he said.

At this point, he stated that, if the Government of Spain and the European Union had "a little bit of geopolitical vision, they would realize that reinforcing sovereignty, the institutional presence and public services in Ceuta, incorporating Ceuta into all the official mechanisms from which it is separated, is the best strategic decision they could make."
