Strait of Hormuz offer from Iran to the USA: We can open it in 7 days

According to the statements of an unnamed Iranian official who spoke to the Japanese Kyodo news agency, Iran offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 7 days if the United States takes the first steps to relieve military pressure.

The Iranian official stated that the proposal, which envisages the resumption of talks to permanently end the hostilities between Iran and the USA, was conveyed to Washington through mediators on September 16.

Noting that there will be no meeting between Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump at the 81st General Assembly of the United Nations held in New York this week, the Iranian official said, "There may be a possibility of progress towards an agreement."

If progress is to be made in diplomacy, Washington must show seriousness and determination, the official said.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The new development took place in an environment where negotiations between the USA and Iran were blocked due to disagreements regarding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is a strategic maritime transit route for energy and commodity supply.

After the USA and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28, Iran began to retaliate with attacks on regional countries hosting Israeli and US assets.

Following the ceasefire brokered by Pakistan in April, Washington and Tehran signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding last June, which gave the parties 60 days to discuss a long-term agreement, but the two sides soon launched mutual attacks again.

While the USA reactivated its military blockade of Iranian ports, Tehran also closed the Hormuz.
