Irene Montero formalizes her candidacy and demands open primaries in Podemos

This Saturday, Irene Montero formalized her candidacy for the general elections for Podemos in an event in which the entire leadership of the party participated and in which she expressed her desire to hold primaries open "to everyone" for the designation of the leader of the alternative left.

Montero's movement adds pressure to Sumar, which at the beginning of the electoral course continues without a leader and throughout the last year has reached out several times to Podemos to integrate into the space in pursuit of a unity that avoids the dispersion of the vote. Of course, in space they have always ruled out holding primaries for the election of the candidate, and much more so an open system like the one proposed by the former Minister of Equality.

"I want to be your candidate, but not in any way. I want to be with primaries open to everyone, in which the entire team can be chosen by Podemos and anyone who wants to participate. I know it is a difficult task, but it is very worth trying to use politics so that people live well," the former Minister of Equality launched at an event held under the motto "Peace, home and work."

In April of last year, Podemos launched Montero as its reference to lead a purple candidate for the general elections, with a hand extended to other sectors of the left and civil society. A challenge that the former minister took on to once again raise a "strong" and "not subordinated" left to the PSOE. However, the party has not yet defined its alliance policy, beyond encouraging for a few months the tandem between Irene Montero and Gabriel Rufián, which, with his evasions, the Republican ended up letting fall under his own weight.
