Bank hostage crisis in Izmir: 5 employees rescued, suspect arrested

The incident took place at around 16.30 on September 9 at a bank branch on İnönü Street in Karabağlar district. According to the information obtained, C.A. entered the bank and quickly seized the gun belonging to the private security guard. The suspect pointed the gun and took 5 employees inside the bank hostage.

Upon notice, many police officers, negotiators and special operations teams were dispatched to the address. The teams took extensive security measures by closing the street to pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

During the negotiation process, the suspect's mother was also brought to the scene in order to persuade him to surrender. In the statement made by the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office following the incident, it was emphasized that the investigation was continuing in many aspects. In the statement, the following statements were made: "On September 9, 2026, around 16.30, a person named C.A. came to a bank branch on İnönü Street in the Karabağlar district of Izmir, took the gun belonging to a private security guard and took 5 employees inside the bank hostage. As a result of the negotiations and the work carried out by the special operations elements, the 5 bank employees taken hostage were safely rescued and the suspicious person was taken into custody. Regarding the incident, our Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office An investigation was launched immediately and 2 Deputy Chief Public Prosecutors and 2 Public Prosecutors were assigned to carry out the investigation in an effective and coordinated manner.

The details of the first interrogation of the suspect C.A., who was taken into custody and taken to the police, were revealed. It was learned that C.A., who was determined to be a cook by profession but not actively working, stated in his statement that there was no focus behind which he received instructions, that he planned the action alone and that his purpose was not robbery.

On the other hand, it was learned that C.A. stated in his statement that he resorted to this method to draw attention to oppressed, murdered, needy and homeless girls. The suspect, who was noted to be mentally unstable and had previously received psychiatric treatment, was arrested by the court after being processed at the police station.
