Jonathan Burkardt is hoping to be invited to the DFB selection after a strong performance in Mainz

After his strong performance in Eintracht Frankfurt's 3-1 derby win in Mainz, Jonathan Burkardt is hoping for a call from national coach Jürgen Klopp next week. “That would be nice,” said the Eintracht striker with a view to the upcoming squad nomination for the DFB team’s four Nations League games at the end of September and beginning of October.

Klopp sat in the stands in Mainz on Saturday and saw a further improved Burkardt, who contributed a goal and an assist to only Frankfurt's second Bundesliga win in Mainz. «I think I did well today. But the most important thing is that we as Eintracht Frankfurt are going in the right direction. Then everything else will come,” said Burkardt.

Since his debut in October 2024 against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Burkardt has only played five international matches. After a mixed preseason, he missed the World Cup in the summer. Now he would love to get started under Klopp.

Burkardt impresses with a goal and an assist

At his old place of work in Mainz, the 26-year-old was a constant source of unrest and, alongside double goalscorer Can Uzun and goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, who crowned his strong performance with a penalty saved by national player Nadiem Amiri, one of the most noticeable Eintracht professionals. “I was very happy that Jonny scored in his old living room,” said Frankfurt coach Adi Hütter.

However, Burkardt refrained from celebrating after his goal to make it 2-0 shortly before half-time out of respect for the Mainz fans. "I had a great time here, experienced a lot of appreciation and was extremely supported by Mainz 05. That's why it was clear to me in advance," said Burkardt, explaining his reluctance.

The relief over the first win of the season was still huge. “It's really a very, very good feeling, especially after the first two matchdays, which were difficult for us.
