Zverev meets Shelton in the US Open final – “I like atmospheres like that”

Alexander Zverev goes into his final against the American Ben Shelton at the US Open without fear of a heated atmosphere in front of almost 24,000 spectators. «I don't care. I've been playing in stadiums that are sometimes against me for over ten years," said the 29-year-old before the final duel at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest tennis arena in the world. «I'm used to it, I like atmospheres like that too. I'll enjoy it somewhere and hopefully be successful."

Zverev will play for his second Grand Slam title today at 8 p.m. German time (2 p.m. local time). Shelton could celebrate the first title by an American male at one of the four most important tournaments since Andy Roddick in 2003 and can count on the support of the majority of the fans. «For me, a loud and energetic audience is always great, as long as it's fair and doesn't interrupt me in the middle of the game. Zverev: French Open title gives peace

The Hamburg native could become the second male German tennis professional to win the US Open title after Boris Becker in 1989. Zverev was in the final in New York six years ago, but had to admit defeat to the Austrian Dominic Thiem. He was only two points short of triumph after leading the set 2-0.

This year he won his first Grand Slam title at the French Open. “What perhaps gives me peace of mind is that I won in Paris,” said Zverev. «On Sunday it's a huge tennis match. A Grand Slam final is a Grand Slam final. There will be nerves, you have to deal with it and show your best tennis.”
