Judd Trump defeats Zhao Xintong 5-1 to reach British Open semi-finals

Judd Trump thrashed world number one Zhao Xintong 5-1 as he moved into the semi-finals of the British Open.

The Englishman will now face Aaron Hill or Jak Jones on Saturday, with Mark Selby taking on Liam Highfield in the other last-four encounter.

"When it goes down to two or one table it is a completely different set-up and you feel like the tournament comes alive," Trump said on Channel 5.

"In that kind of scenario I am so used to being out there and it gets the adrenalin going and it gets me more up for the fight especially against him [Zhao]."

Earlier on Friday, Highfield had defeated teenage star Stan Moody 5-2, while Selby claimed a thumping 5-0 victory over Jack Lisowski.

And Trump delivered more of the same in the evening against the man who recently deposed him at the top of the rankings.

The 37-year-old, who has won 31 ranking titles, opened with a break of 101 and 57 to take the opening two frames before Zhao responded with a century of his own.

However, Trump restricted his Chinese opponent to just 29 points over the following three frames, while knocking in two further half-centuries to easily advance.

"[I was] probably a little more determined than normal," Trump added.

"In the past when I have lost the number one spot or people put other players as the favourite, you don't have that as number one and have that same demeanour of wanting to prove everyone wrong or that I'm the best."
