Shooting in Plourin-lès-Morlaix: a woman killed, her companion injured, the suspect neighbor airlifted

An investigation into assassination and attempt was opened after shootings that occurred on Friday in Plourin-lès-Morlaix, in Finistère. A woman aged around 60 was killed and her companion, aged around 55, seriously injured. The suspect, their neighbor, was found with a serious head injury. 20 Minutes takes stock of the situation.

What we know about the shootings in Plourin-lès-Morlaix

The events took place shortly after 2 p.m., after three “detonations” spaced a few minutes apart were reported to the police and emergency services. Around fifty gendarmes were mobilized, including the GIGN branch in Nantes and three negotiators. Upon their arrival, the soldiers discovered the inert body of a woman on an exterior staircase, near the home of a man who appeared to be holed up and armed under this staircase. According to the first elements of the investigation, this death could be linked to the first shot heard by witnesses.

The victim's companion was also hit when he "arrived on site", according to the Brest public prosecutor, Stéphane Kellenberger. “Seriously injured”, this man seemed “medically out of danger”. The two victims were neighbors of the suspect.

The suspect airlifted in very critical condition

After securing the scene, the sixty-year-old was found “inanimate and armed” by the gendarmes. He had “a head injury” and was airlifted to a hospital in “very critical” condition.

The findings made on site could “suggest a suicide attempt on his part,” said Stéphane Kellenberger. This injury could be linked to the third shooting reported by witnesses. A neighbor interviewed by AFP mentioned a possible neighborhood dispute, without this hypothesis being established by the investigation at this stage.

An investigation opened for assassination and attempt

The area was cordoned off for several hours. A municipal room was opened for residents who could not return home and a medical-psychological unit was set up. The security perimeter was lifted around 8 p.m., according to the Finistère prefecture.
