Kahramanmaraş School Attack Case Begins, Parents Will Be Tried

The trial regarding the armed attack at Ayser Çalık Secondary School in Kahramanmaraş's Onikişubat district, in which 9 students and teacher Ayla Kara lost their lives, begins today.

Kahramanmaraş Chief Public Prosecutor's Office filed an indictment against the attacker İsa Aras Mersinli's first-class police chief and police inspector father, Uğur Mersinli, and his mother, Peyman Pınar Mersinli. In the case to be heard at the Kahramanmaraş 3rd High Criminal Court, Uğur Mersinli will be tried with 10 life imprisonments for the crime of "killing with possible intent", 30 years in prison for the crime of "injuring with possible intent", and Peyman Pınar Mersinli will be tried with a request for up to 22.5 years in prison for the crime of "causing the death and injury of more than one person through conscious negligence".

DETAILS FROM THE INDICTMENT

In the indictment, the prosecutor's office claimed that Uğur Mersinli did not take the necessary precautions even though he knew about his child's psychological state, his self-harming behavior and his interest in weapons.

It was claimed that the father took the attacker to the shooting range and allowed him to use a gun, kept a large number of guns easily accessible at home, and did not adequately monitor his digital activities. It was argued that Mersinli was in a position to foresee the deaths and injuries that would occur as a result of the attack.

It was revealed that although Uğur Mersinli received 32 written notifications from the school regarding his son's psychological state, he did not take the necessary intervention and took the child to the shooting range and had him practice shooting.
