Boat disaster on Lake Tanganyika: 41 dead, 49 rescued

The tragedy occurred on Thursday when a boat carrying about 100 passengers and goods set off from the city of Kigoma in western Tanzania to Kalemie - the capital of Tanganyika province in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to Norris Mulongoyi, Minister of Transport in the government of the Congolese province of Tanganyika, 49 people were saved. Unfortunately, 41 passengers did not survive the disaster.

It has not yet been determined what led to the boat capsizing. However, as the Associated Press reminds, similar accidents are not uncommon in this region. Boats plying on Lake Tanganyika are often overloaded, which significantly increases the risk of disasters.
