Keir Starmer announces retirement from British Parliament after eleven years

The former British Prime Minister has announced his retirement from Parliament after eleven years. The Labor politician, who was replaced as head of government by Andy Burnham in mid-July, told the Camden New Journal newspaper that it was the “right time.” Starmer has represented the London constituency of Holborn and St. Pancras in the British House of Commons since 2015. According to the PA news agency, he has already informed his party about the plans.

“It was a great honor and privilege to represent the best constituency in the country,” he said, according to the Camden New Journal. "I will now focus on other things, particularly international affairs, including defense, security, trade and technology in a rapidly changing world."

Starmer was forced to resign as prime minister due to numerous government crises. Recently, several ministers turned away from him, including the influential Defense Minister John Healey. In May, the Labor Party suffered heavy losses in local and regional elections in England, Scotland and Wales. Starmer also found himself in trouble because of the Epstein contacts of the diplomat Peter Mandelson, whom he had appointed ambassador to Washington.

His successor Andy Burnham had his first parliamentary session since becoming prime minister on Tuesday. He is the seventh head of government in ten years. When he took office, the Labor politician spoke of an ambitious "ten-year plan" with numerous social policy measures to rebuild the country.
