The CFDT calls for an increase in the index point for civil servants in the face of inflation

On the eve of the mobilization planned for this Tuesday in the public service, the CFDT is raising its voice. “We must increase civil servants”, launched the boss of the union, Marylise Léon, this Monday, September 28 on France 2. Convinced that the latter “all contribute collectively to the quality of the public service”, the general secretary recalled that “the index point was frozen for many years” with only “two revaluations over the last ten years, in 2022 and 2023”. “Largely insufficient” according to her “in view of the increase in inflation”.

“We cannot have quality public services if there are no quality working conditions,” she continued, while increasing the remuneration of civil servants would make it possible to “recognize the work that is accomplished”. A recognition that was expected to say the least by public service personnel, who feel “very deep anger”, according to Marylise Léon. “Many agents tell us: ‘We are fed up with civil servant bashing, with those who only talk about us in Excel spreadsheet lines, who talk about us as a cost’,” he declared.

A meeting expected on October 1st

Consequence: “Today there is a shortage of 60,000 positions which are not filled in all public functions,” recalls the trade unionist, who denounces degraded working conditions. On this subject, the CFDT “made proposals in June” and “the minister did not meet our expectations: we have another meeting on October 1 and therefore we will judge based on what is proposed,” she further underlined.

Scalded by the government's desire to once again freeze the index point in its draft budget for 2027, the trade union organizations representing the public service announced a day of strike on Tuesday, with the ambition of putting pressure on the government a few days before the presentation of the draft budget. CGT, FO, CFDT, UNSA, FSU, Solidaires, CFE-CGC and FA-FP are demanding better remuneration conditions for public officials, in particular because of inflation linked, among other things, to fuel prices.
