The European Commission presents the "Kids Act" to protect minors online

The European Commission was expected on this subject. After giving the main points on Wednesday during her annual State of the Union speech, Ursula von der Leyen presented this European text on Thursday aimed at better protecting young people in Member States on online platforms. While the plan to ban social networks for those under 15 has already gained ground among several European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron, many have called for a harmonized response to the question of protecting minors online, across the entire Union.

Rather than a classic ban, “the approach we take will be gradual and differentiated” because “each age has its own sensitivities, and each age will have its own appropriate level of protection,” explained Ursula von der Leyen.
