The DGT denies changes to the driving test as of October 1

Publications spread in recent weeks on social networks ensure that the theoretical exam to obtain a driving license in Spain will change as of next October 1. The messages, shared without an official source, talk about the incorporation of development questions and the replacement of the current test with a test based on risk perception videos.

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) confirms to EL MUNDO that there will be no changes to the driving test on October 1. "For now everything remains the same. We are studying including risk perception videos in the theoretical part, but there is nothing yet. This would mean modifying the Driver Regulations and the process has not even started yet." The test will continue to maintain its current structure: 30 multiple choice questions, with a maximum of three errors and 30 minutes to complete it.

The origin of the confusion lies in the fact that on October 1 the modification to the Traffic Regulations will come into force, which reinforces the protection of vulnerable users and adapts the rules to mobility that is more focused on people and urban environments. This reform is aligned with the sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda, approved by the UN in 2015, which seeks to improve people's health and well-being, access to affordable energy, the search for more sustainable cities and communities, and climate action.

"For the first time, the standard includes a definition of "vulnerable road user", someone who, due to the means of travel used or due to the physical characteristics of the age group to which they belong, has a greater risk of suffering injuries in the event of a traffic accident or those that are more serious," says the DGT.

The effect of the rumor is already perceived in some driving schools. María Paz, from Valencia Vallbona Training Center, explains that they have not observed an increase in new enrollments, but they have observed an increase in requests to take the exam before October. "On social networks they have gotten the idea that this is for the theorist and it is not like that," he points out. The center continues to prepare its students according to the current format, in the absence of an official communication announcing a modification for that date.

Regarding the availability of places, the driving school cannot yet make a forecast. He is waiting for the next summons from the Provincial Traffic Headquarters to check how demand is evolving and what exam days are enabled after the summer.
