Netflix (also visible on Sky Glass, Sky Q and via app on NOW Smart Stick) has published the first images of the miniseries East of Eden, Zoe Kazan's adaptation of John Steinbeck's 1952 novel of the same name. Actress Florence Pugh plays the protagonist anti-heroine, Cathy Ames, and also holds the role of executive producer. The modern reinterpretation of the novel, which will explore the multigenerational saga of the Trask family and will focus on the woman's character, will debut on the streaming platform on October 1, 2026, almost four years after its initial announcement. The cast also includes Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton as Faye, Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Joseph Zada as Cal Trask, Joe Anders as Aron Trask, Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Mike Faist as Charles Trask and Hoon Lee as Lee.
The TV series was filmed in various locations in New Zealand. Zoe Kazan wrote the film adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel, which had already been made into the 1955 film East of Eden, directed by her grandfather, Elia Kazan. Zoe Kazan also serves as co-showrunner with Jeb Stuart and both, with Florence Pugh, serve as executive producers alongside Garth David, who directed episodes 1-4, Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, who directed episodes 5-7, and Antoine Douiahy, Zack Hayden, Steve Golin, David Levine and Jill Arthur.
JOHN STEINBECK, NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE
Born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas, California, as reported on the Nobel Prize website, "John Steinbeck grew up in a small town, in a family that, a few generations earlier, had emigrated to the United States from Germany, England and Ireland. While studying at Stanford University, during holidays and summers he worked in fields growing sugar beets and other agricultural products. He did not earn a degree, but interrupted his studies to move to New York. There he worked as a writer and critic and met his first wife, Carol Henning. He married twice more and had two children." Regarding his literary output, the site continues: "The living conditions of migrants and seasonal workers became a recurring theme in Steinbeck's writings, particularly evident in Of Mice and Men and The Fury. The latter tells of how unemployment and abuse of power forced farmers to migrate from Oklahoma to California. His writing is characterized by compassion for the oppressed and the poor, expressed with compassionate humor and a keen eye for social and economic injustices. His other notable works include The East of Eden (1952) and The Pearl (1947)”. In 1962, the writer won the Nobel Prize for Literature "for his realistic and imaginative writings, which combine empathetic humor and profound social perception". The novel East of Eden is set in the Salinas Valley, California, between the beginning of the 20th century and the end of the First World War. At the beginning of the book, before introducing the characters, the author describes the setting and, later, describes the story of the farmer and inventor Samuel Hamilton and his wife Liza, immigrants from Ireland, and their nine children. As the boys grow up and begin to leave that land, a wealthy stranger, Adam Trask, buys the best ranch in the Valley.
