The United States and Iran resume talks after several months of interruption

The United States and Iran have resumed talks after several months of interruption. Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, the holding of a three-hour meeting between American and Iranian representatives. A new meeting must take place “in the very near future”.

This resumption of dialogue comes as tensions remain high between Washington and Tehran. A few minutes earlier, at the United Nations, Donald Trump had discussed the choices that he believes are available to the United States: “I have a big decision to make: will an agreement be concluded with Iran […]? » before adding: “Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic […]? Am I sending them to hell […]? ". Members of the Iranian delegation left the room during his speech.

A diplomatic outcome is still possible

The American president then estimated that a diplomatic outcome remained possible. “I hope they make the right decisions before it is too late,” he said during a meeting with Middle East leaders. Donald Trump also considers that an agreement could be reached after the American mid-term legislative elections scheduled for November.

The discussions were led on the American side by emissary Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of Donald Trump and also negotiator on this issue. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi represented Tehran, according to Iranian state television Irib. Steve Witkoff was positive after the meeting: “I feel very good” about the exchanges.

The Strait of Hormuz at the heart of the discussions

The issue of the Strait of Hormuz is at the center of the negotiations. According to Irib, Abbas Araghchi presented the Iranian conditions with a view to reopening this strategic crossing. Tehran is demanding in particular “the immediate lifting of the naval blockade, the rapid payment of all frozen Iranian assets, as well as an end to the war on all fronts”. The conditions linked to a possible reopening of the strait were already at the heart of diplomatic exchanges on Tuesday.

Dialogue between Washington and Tehran had been interrupted since June after the failure of a memorandum of understanding. Donald Trump described the new meeting as “very good”, without announcing an agreement at this stage. The announced continuation of discussions must now determine whether the two parties can reconcile their positions on the war and on the conditions posed by Iran concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
