Trump says Russia-Ukraine deal will happen 'sooner than we think'

Donald Trump assured Tuesday that an agreement between Russia and Ukraine would arrive “sooner than we think” before the UN General Assembly. “We are working very closely with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, and we will resolve this case. This will happen, I believe, sooner than we think,” assured the American president, who has already made similar remarks several times without any real progress towards a resolution of the conflict being made.

Donald Trump then had a bilateral meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, with whom he assured he had a “very good relationship”, while the main person concerned remained impassive. “It is time” for the war to end, said the Republican leader, who also praised the “very good fighters” in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president said he wanted the war to end “before winter” and added that he was counting on “help” from his American counterpart, with whom he has a very complex relationship. Donald Trump, who has never attributed responsibility for the war to Moscow, recently criticized Ukraine for driving up the price of diesel with its attacks on Russian refineries.
