Why It Matters

Junts overturns the anti-eviction decrees and Congress is filled with cries of protest

Congress rejected the Government's anti-eviction decrees after the votes against PP, Vox and Junts, while slogans such as 'vulture funds govern Congress' and 'shame' were heard from the galleries. The case of Maricarmen, whose situation has mobilized protests from Ceuta to Puerta del Sol, became a symbol of the housing crisis. Junts justified their vote in defense of Catalan interests, despite the fact that their electorate prioritizes housing. The PSOE sees social unrest as an electoral opportunity, although it warns that the left does not offer voter alternatives. The Government insists that housing is a structural problem linked to salaries, public services and transportation.

A majority of Spaniards support the precautionary suspension of the Grandchildren Law by the Supreme Court

A survey by Sigma Dos for EL MUNDO reveals that 65.1% of Spaniards approve of the precautionary suspension of the Grandchildren Law by the Supreme Court, while 30.7% disagree and 7.8% do not know or do not answer. The support is mainly justified by guaranteeing the integrity of the electoral roll and avoiding possible distortions in the results of the next general elections, with 39.2% considering the measure necessary to avoid a 'pucherazo' and 22.3% seeing it as a reasonable precaution while the registration criteria are reviewed.

The PP demands immediate elections after the failure of the housing decrees, but doubts that Sánchez will call them

The Popular Party asks Pedro Sánchez to call elections immediately after the repeal of his two housing decrees, although it doubts that he will do so. PP sources remember previous occasions in which Sánchez avoided elections despite pressure, and warn that they will only believe in a call when they see it. Meanwhile, the PP appears prepared to face elections in November or December, confident of achieving an absolute majority with Vox, and criticizes the Government for using housing as an electoral excuse and for alleged attempts to hide cases of corruption.

Junts withdraws its support for the Government and opens the way to elections after voting against the housing law

Junts voted against the housing decrees, withdrawing its support for the Sánchez Government and increasing the likelihood of early elections. The article analyzes the history of political turns of Junts and its leader Puigdemont, from the unilateral declaration of independence to the dependence on their votes for Sánchez's investiture through the Amnesty law. The irony is highlighted that those who previously called for Puigdemont's prison are now celebrating their decision, and there is a warning about a possible polarized electoral scenario between housing, immigration and Ceuta, with massive mobilizations throughout Spain that could define the future of the Government.
