Macron and Carney in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon to reaffirm sovereignty

French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will reaffirm the "sovereignty of nations" on September 20 in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, French islands in the North Atlantic, in the face of Donald Trump's aims, the Elysée announced this morning.

"It will be the first official visit of a Canadian prime minister to the archipelago, a symbol of the strength of the relationship that unites our two countries" said the French presidency.

The archipelago, about twenty kilometers from the coast of Newfoundland, at the eastern end of Canada, includes 3 islands linked by sandy isthmuses, and 6,000 inhabitants. Macron will stop there on the way to New York, where he will attend the UN General Assembly.

"France and Canada share the same values ​​of freedom, democracy, the rule of law and respect for the sovereignty of nations", underlined the French presidency.

"In a world marked by the return of power relations, geopolitical tensions and new dependencies - he added - France and Canada share the ambition of working together, and with all countries that share these values, strengthening their ability to decide and act autonomously".

Trump sparked a new controversy by posting on his social media on Monday a map covering the territories of Canada, Greenland, Mexico and the Antilles with the United States flag. Also incorporating into this set various French overseas territories, such as Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.
