Multi-story building collapses in New Delhi: at least three dead

According to media reports, at least three people were killed when a multi-story building collapsed in the Indian capital New Delhi. The police assume that several people could still be lying under the rubble, as the broadcaster NDTV and other Indian media consistently reported. A more precise number was not given. According to reports, dozens could have been in the building, which served as student accommodation, at the time of the accident.

According to NDTV, nine people have been rescued alive from under the rubble since the collapse in the early afternoon (local time) in the Satya Niketan district. Some of them are in critical condition. The search for survivors continued into the evening.

Cause of accident unclear

It was initially unclear why the building, which stood on a densely built-up street, collapsed. Construction work was taking place in the basement of the approximately 50-year-old house, the PTI news agency reported, citing police sources. The ground “trembled” as the building collapsed, PTI quoted a resident as saying.

The Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, expressed deep concern on Platform Every effort would be made “to save those who are trapped,” she wrote.
