Mexico: key witness in Cuén murder arrested

In Mexico, the Attorney General of the Republic arrested Fausto Corrales Rodríguez, the key witness who accompanied Héctor Melesio Cuén Ojeda, former rector of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa and prominent local politician, to the meeting with Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada on 25 July 2024. The arrest took place in the Miguel Hidalgo neighborhood of Mexico City. Formal charges include aiding and abetting Cuén's murder and making false statements to authorities.

According to investigations, the meeting took place in the Huertos del Pedregal estate, where Cuén lost his life and the well-known drug trafficker Zambada was kidnapped. The Prosecutor's Office claims that Corrales provided contradictory versions of the facts, omitting truthful information with the aim of misleading the investigation and hindering the clarification of the matter.

The operation was conducted by specialized departments of the Prosecutor's Office, supported by the Federal Police and Interpol. The authorities underline the complex nature of the investigation, specifying that its repercussions have now directly involved the sphere of sovereignty and national security.
