At least 68 dead in floods in northern India and Nepal

At least 68 people have died in floods and landslides caused by heavy rain in northern India and Nepal.

In the most populous Indian state of Uttar Pradesh alone, 56 people have died in the past three days, the authorities said. More than a thousand houses were damaged. Fields were also badly hit by the water masses.

There were also floods and landslides in neighboring Nepal. The country is still struggling with the consequences of the devastating flash floods at the end of August. The AFP news agency, citing the civil protection authority, reports twelve deaths since Thursday. According to a spokeswoman, seven others are still missing. The Reuters news agency, however, speaks of 14 deaths. The authorities there warned of further flash floods.

According to experts, climate change is leading to an increase in extreme weather events in South Asia.
