Severe storm on the east coast of the United States: damage and flooding

The sea rages and hits hard the houses along the coast of Massachusetts, very close to Boston. Some waves are close to 6 meters high, driven by gusts that reach 100 km/h. Some brave the danger by approaching very close to the stormy ocean, despite calls for caution. “I didn’t get too close, I didn’t want to be swept away by a wave,” confides a passer-by.

The storm suddenly increased in intensity during the night of Saturday September 26. The entire east coast of the United States is affected. Some neighborhoods in New Jersey are completely flooded. In the streets, the water rises then falls with the rhythm of the tides. “This morning, I looked outside, there was almost a meter of water and my car was submerged,” said a resident.

One death and 80,000 homes without electricity in New York

In New York, bad weather left one person dead: a 56-year-old city employee crushed by a tree. In places, the damage is already considerable. Torrential rains and powerful winds caused many trees to fall. The occupant of one house describes her shocking awakening: "I got up to make my coffee before going to work and I heard water running. I then saw a huge waterfall in the bedroom. I went out and discovered a giant oak tree that had crossed the entire back part of my house."

More than 80,000 people are without electricity. Hundreds of planes remain grounded until further notice. And the American authorities are warning: the next few hours promise to be critical. “Believe me, the worst is yet to come,” said New York State Governor Kathy Hochul. Water levels could reach 15 centimeters in some areas.

New Yorkers took advantage of a short lull to go out in a canoe. But from now on, the mayor of the city, Zohran Mamdani, is calling on the population to avoid all travel until Monday.
