In Kabul, clandestine classes for young girls

Snippets of English sentences sneak into the street of this poor district of Kabul, through a half-open window. The front door closes suddenly. Inside, in a cramped room, the silhouettes of crouching teenage girls can be seen. Standing to their right, a young woman writes a few words on the board. Her face, framed by a black veil, highlights her large, autumn-tinted eyes.

Facing the 31-year-old teacher, notebooks on their knees and pens in their hands, around twenty young girls listen to the lesson attentively. Armita has been teaching in secret classes in Kabul for three years now. “It’s risky work and it’s also dangerous for my students, but we have no other choice,” she says.
