64-year-old woman dies gored in Ayna's running of the bulls during patron saint festivities

A 64-year-old woman died this Saturday morning in Ayna (577 inhabitants, Albacete) in one of the bullfights that the municipality celebrates this weekend for its patron saint festivities. The woman, who was participating in the first of these bull runs, was gored by one of the bulls when she was outside the protection barriers installed along the route.

“In one part of the route, in the Caves, she stayed still at the barrier and when she started to run one of the bulls charged her,” explained Juan Ángel Martínez, mayor of Ayna. The videos spread on social networks by some of those attending the bullfight show the woman outside the talanqueras, moving in the opposite direction to the bulls.

Castilla-La Mancha 112 received the notification at 10:55 a.m., activating a medical helicopter. The woman, the councilor noted, came from Catalonia and was with her relatives in a district of the Sierra del Segura. The severity of the injuries caused her to die when she was being transferred to the heliport, after undergoing emergency surgery by the health services present at the scene.

A man of about 60 years of age, who was at a different point on the route, was also injured during the bullfight and was gored in the arm by another of the bulls. The Ayna City Council, its mayor has indicated, has suspended the events planned for this Saturday on the occasion of the festivities in honor of Our Lady Santa María de lo Alto that last until September 8 and that have been marred, tragically, by this event.
