Woman is suspected of poisoning animals after attacks by her neighbor's pets

According to the Civil Police, the investigation began after the animals' owner registered a police report on Monday (21), suspecting that the two pets had been poisoned.

Two dogs and two cats showed signs compatible with poisoning and received emergency veterinary care; however, only one of each species survived.

After the guardian registered the incident, the Paulicéia civil police began investigations to investigate the cases.

The woman was identified and attended the police station, where she admitted to having put rat poison in small pieces of meat and leaving the material on the wall of her own residence. To the police, she stated that she took action after birds she raised were attacked by her neighbor's dogs and cats.

The Civil Police located pieces of meat and sausages that showed signs of contamination. The material was seized and sent for analysis. The case remains under investigation and the woman may face criminal charges.

According to authorities, the case could be classified as a crime of animal abuse, provided for in Federal Law No. 9,605/1998. The definition, however, depends on the analysis of the evidence and the circumstances investigated.

The legislation provides for a sentence of two to five years in prison, a fine and prohibition of custody for cases of mistreatment of dogs and cats. If the animal dies as a result of the conduct, the penalty may be increased.
