Munich nominated as German candidate for the Olympic Games

In the end, it happened as was likely from the beginning: Munich is Germany's candidate to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044.

At the latest after the referendum, in which two thirds of voters said yes to their city's application last October, the host of the 1972 games was also the favorite. Even then, ZEIT suggested that the other applicants should withdraw so that money could be saved and the best candidate could immediately and decisively devote themselves to the international competition.

A few days before the final vote, it was clear that Munich, with its iconic stadium and an Olympic Oktoberfest, was also ahead in the complex evaluation process, but only by a very narrow margin. Perhaps the toughest competitor, Hamburg, was no longer in the running - the citizens of the Elbe did not want the Olympics. And after the left's election victory and only third place in the evaluation, Berlin withdrew at short notice in order to spare itself the shame of a vote defeat in the Baden-Baden Kurhaus. Here Munich is now ahead of Cologne.
