Snow falls on Campos de Cima da Serra in Rio Grande do Sul

On the afternoon of this Sunday (6), snow fell on Campos de Cima da Serra, in Rio Grande do Sul. The phenomenon was registered by tourists and residents at around 3pm, when thermometers read 3.8ºC in the municipality of São José dos Ausentes.

Tourists who went horseback riding in the city recorded images on videos (see above). Residents of farms in the region also record the phenomenon, which was confirmed by Climatempo Meteorologia.

In the neighboring city, Cambará do Sul, there was winter precipitation in the town of Azulega. Both municipalities border Santa Catarina. From the images, however, Climatempo states that it was not possible to determine whether it was snow or freezing rain — or whether it was freezing rain and snow at the same time.

In São Francisco de Paula and Gramado, there was freezing rain and/or uvapel.

❄️ Winter precipitation is any form of water that falls from the atmosphere in winter, generally associated with low temperatures. May include: snow (ice crystals that fall in flakes), sleet or uvapel (ice balls) and freezing rain (liquid rain that freezes when it touches cold surfaces).

There is still a chance that it will snow again in Serra Gaúcha this Sunday night (6).

"Winter precipitation in Serra Gaúcha occurred a little earlier than expected, during the afternoon and not at night. But it could still occur tonight. The tendency is for cloudiness to decrease during the early hours of Monday (7) and the day should dawn with a lot of frost, with negative temperatures", says meteorologist Josélia Pegorim, from Climatempo Meteorologia.
