NYT: Iran hardliners disrupt truce with US in early July

Hardliners in Iran's ruling circles deliberately disrupted the truce with the United States in early July. This was reported by The New York Times (NYT), citing sources.

It is noted that those responsible for the breakdown of the truce ordered to open fire on three ships in the Strait of Hormuz secretly from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The politician was in Iraq at that moment. According to the publication, the Iranian leader was outraged and called the commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), General Ahmad Vahidi. During the conversation, the president called these actions reckless, after which he demanded an explanation.

Vahidi responded by saying that he did not order the strike. Pezeshkian urgently returned to Tehran, but the next morning the United States launched a retaliatory strike on Iran.

According to the author of the material, a significant part of the Iranian government did not know that the attack was planned. It is noted that only a marginal radical faction in the country’s leadership acted.
