It was she who went to the police to report the disappearance, but in reality she knew very well what had happened to her ex-husband because it was she, together with her son, who had killed him. Two years after the disappearance of Salvatore Giglio, who disappeared on 28 September 2024 without leaving any trace of him, Daniela Rossato, 60, and Nicola Giglio, 28, the couple's youngest son, ended up in handcuffs. For the magistrates of the Crotone prosecutor's office, it was they who killed the man and perhaps made the body disappear by throwing it into the Tacina river.
But on September 28, 2024, when the woman showed up at the Cutro police station to report her disappearance, no one imagined any of this. However, the investigators immediately noticed one discordant detail: Rossato says she hasn't had any news from her ex-husband for a week.
The investigations begin: inspections, telephone and environmental interceptions, the man's wife and son and other family members are interviewed several times. The inconsistencies accumulate, the versions that mother and son provide on the reasons that convinced the man to move away are increasingly unlikely. They hypothesize that the man, a Jehovah's Witness, went to preach who knows where, they say that he was planning to go to Switzerland, they speak of mysterious women who came to pick him up, but above all that he would have left the house furtively, perhaps through a window, without passing through the main entrance.
A desperate attempt to explain why that man was seen entering that house, but never leaving again. The last images of him alive were recorded by the camera of a nearby house. In the video you can see a ferocious argument between the man and his wife, who then enter the house and continue arguing. Shortly afterwards, the woman's young son arrives out of breath. Two nights later, on September 23, the same camera from the house next door frames the suspects as they load what is suspected to be the body of Salvatore Giglio or what remains of it into a car.
Someone in the village knows or suspects, an anonymous person arrives at the police station: "The wife hated him and wanted his money. Investigate her and her little son."
A year later Daniela Rossato and her son were formally registered on the register of suspects and the divers began to inspect the Tacina river stream inch by inch. Evidence is piling up against them. It turns out that in the days following the murder there would have been an anomalous purchase of bleach and muriatic acid. “It went well... it was a luxury event that otherwise he would have sold everything,” Rossato is heard saying.
For magistrates, that was exactly the motive for the murder: in the months before his disappearance the man was selling all his possessions. The hypothesis, validated by the investigating judge, is that the man was killed in the house, from where the two attempted to make every trace disappear, washing every surface with bleach to make the traces of blood disappear. A long, meticulous job while they were trying to make the body disappear, just as meticulous, although clumsy, was the work to throw off the investigation. The investigators didn't fall for it and they were handcuffed.
