Venice, two prisoners escape from the Santa Maria Maggiore prison: both captured

Two inmates escaped this morning from the Santa Maria Maggiore prison in Venice. One was captured practically immediately, while the second managed to get away to Mestre, where he was subsequently tracked down. According to initial information, these would be foreign prisoners. This was noted by Sappe, who highlights how the escape would have occurred in ways similar to those already recorded previously in the same institute.

In fact, on September 17th, another inmate, Romanian, escaped from the courtyard of the penitentiary institution, climbing over the surrounding wall.

"What happened this morning in Venice Santa Maria Maggiore is yet another alarm bell on a situation which, in the prisons of the Veneto, has now reached a level of criticality that can no longer be ignored - states Donato Capece, general secretary of Sappe - The Penitentiary Police staff continues to guarantee their service with a sense of duty, but cannot be left alone to face increasingly frequent emergencies".

"It is particularly serious that we are once again talking about an escape that occurred in ways that recall episodes that have already occurred in the same institution - adds Vona, secretary of Sappe Triveneto - It cannot become the rule to entrust the security of the prison exclusively to the reaction capacity of the agents".

"We ask the prison administration to intervene without further delays", conclude Capece and Vona. "It is necessary to immediately verify the ways in which the escape was possible, identify any structural and organizational critical issues and adopt all the necessary measures to ensure that episodes of this kind cannot be repeated."
