Guapo jaguar is transferred to Acre to mate with a female from Chico Mendes Park

The transfer to Rio Branco aims to mate, which should take place in two or three months, between Guapo and the only mountain lion that lives in Chico Mendes Park, called Sol.

The animal was rescued as a weakened puppy, in 2023, on a soybean plantation. At the time, he was sent to the Wild Animal Triage Center (Cetas) in Porto Velho, where he underwent a recovery process.

According to the environmental analyst and head of Cetas de Porto Velho, Aquilas Mascarenhas, as he does not have these skills, releasing Guapo into the jungle could put his life at risk. Therefore, the alternative found for this situation was transfer to Acre, through the Management and Conservation Program.

"Every animal that arrives here at Cetas, the passage is temporary, not definitive. So, our main objective is to work on recovering the animal and, if possible, returning it to the wild. In some cases, as is the case with this specimen, it was not possible to carry out this reintroduction work, but we are also working on sending it to sanctuaries and zoos, which is what will happen now", he explained.

The action had the support of the State Secretariat for Environmental Development (Sedam) in partnership with Ibama, responsible for transporting the animal, which took around 6 hours from Porto Velho to the capital of Acre.

“You have to be very careful when loading transport and until the final destination, which is where we will have to travel around 500 kilometers to our destination, so that the transport is as less traumatic as possible”, concluded Aquilas.
