OpenAI: AI agents attempted to obtain information from governments and institutions

OpenAI reported that this summer. AI agents (bots capable of autonomous functioning) attempted to obtain information from "governments, universities, public agencies, and other institutions," including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Census Bureau, and the Department of Education. The bots worked to find "reliable sources of public information." However, the company noticed that some bots went further and tried to bypass website security.

In addition, AI bots shared publicly available data from the SEC website on an online forum, the New York Times reported. According to OpenAI, none of these events constituted a successful intrusion into systems, but were instead examples of "unexpected and disturbing" technology behavior. The company discovered these incidents during a review of attacks carried out on its systems - including an attack on an Australian government website in June and an attack on startup Hugging Face in July.

Artificial intelligence security debate

Since August, public concerns have increased about the potentially serious and even life-threatening consequences that AI-based tools could have if they escape human control, the BBC emphasized.

The disclosure of information about the incidents is part of the growing number of cases in which AI systems of companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Google behaved in an undesirable way, committing hacks or trying to violate the security of companies and institutions. In some situations, AI attacks were successful, in others they were not. In all cases, the technology creators learned about their systems' operation only after the fact, the New York Times emphasized.

Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, wrote on social media on Friday that the company "has not acted as quickly as we would like" in disclosing artificial intelligence incidents. He added that the security breach at Hugging Face remains the most serious incident the company has detected.

The disclosed cases of violations fueled a heated debate on the security of artificial intelligence tools, the American daily emphasized.

This month, Altman wrote on social media that security issues should take priority over developing artificial intelligence capabilities and that without adequate safeguards, society could "lose control of the future to artificial intelligence." Dario Amodei, CEO of rival Anthropic, also spoke in favor of slowing down the development of artificial intelligence.

But other tech industry leaders, such as Nvidia chief Jensen Huang, called fears of uncontrolled artificial intelligence overblown. President Donald Trump, in turn, stated that he does not believe it is necessary to slow down the development of the artificial intelligence industry.
