More than 8.5 tons of coffee are seized in supermarkets in Espírito Santo with irregularities in weight and humidity

According to the Civil Police, information on packaging could mislead consumers regarding the characteristics and quantity of the product sold.

The Civil Police seized more than 8.5 tons of coffee with irregular weight and humidity in supermarkets in Greater Vitória.

The Goiás brand product had humidity above the permitted limit and labels with information that misled the consumer.

Delegate Eduardo Passamani stated that supermarkets are not responsible and the investigation will focus on the product manufacturer.

Excess humidity can encourage harmful fungi. Crimes against consumer relationships carry penalties of 2 to 5 years in prison.

Around 8.5 tons of coffee from a Goiás brand were withdrawn from circulation in supermarkets in Greater Vitória due to irregularities, such as a humidity level above the permitted limit and differences between the weight of the product and the quantity declared on the packaging.

Coffee was sold in several establishments in Espírito Santo. According to the Civil Police, a humidity level above the permitted limit increases the weight of the product without representing the effective quantity of coffee delivered to the consumer.

Irregularities were also identified on product labels, with information that could mislead consumers regarding the characteristics and quantity of the product sold.

This means that the consumer could have been led to buy the product based on information on the packaging that was not in accordance with what should be stated.

The name of the coffee brand and the supermarkets inspected were not disclosed.

The operation was carried out by the Civil Police, through the Specialized Consumer Protection Police Station (Decon), and aimed to combat consumer fraud related to the quality and sale of coffee in the state.

According to the head of Decon, delegate Eduardo Passamani, commercial establishments cannot be held responsible for the irregularities identified.

"The investigations will focus on the company responsible for manufacturing the product (brand from Goiás), with the aim of investigating possible crimes against consumer relations", stated the delegate.

As for the moisture content, excess does not mean that the coffee is contaminated, but it can compromise the quality of the product and encourage the development of fungi. Some of them can produce mycotoxins, which pose health risks. However, it was not reported whether fungi or mycotoxins were identified in the recalled products.

Crimes related to consumer relations can result in sentences of two to five years in prison, depending on the legal framework of the facts. The investigation continues to identify those responsible for the irregularities found in the product.
