Police dismantle clandestine Chilean factory in Jacarepaguá

According to investigators, the site had a structure to produce the material in large quantities, which is prohibited in the state.

The factory operated on Estrada do Cafundá and was in full operation when agents from the Environmental Protection Police Department arrived. Machines, spools and chemicals used to manufacture the line were seized and taken to the Police City.

The five prisoners could be charged with an environmental crime, with a sentence of up to 4 years in prison. One of them had already been framed previously for the same crime.

According to the police, the Chilean line is four times sharper than the wax line. The material mainly poses a risk to motorcyclists and cyclists, as the wire can be practically invisible and cause serious cuts.

Two weeks ago, the paraglider piloted by Army Colonel Álvaro Ferreira was hit by a kite line on São Conrado Beach and fell into the sea. He was taken to Miguel Couto Hospital, but did not survive.

In April, business administrator Leandro Cardoso also died after being hit in the neck by a kite line while riding a motorcycle in Cascadura.

Data from Hotline Denúncia show an increase in the number of incidents related to the Chilean line. There were 561 registrations in 2024 and 1,203 in 2025, more than double. This year, there are already 639 cases.

This is the second Chilean factory closed by the Civil Police in Jacarepaguá in four months. The unit deactivated in May, according to the investigation, supplied other states.
