First weekend of spring records intense heat in Santa Catarina with temperatures above 33°C

The first weekend of spring started with intense heat in Santa Catarina. According to data from the state Civil Defense, the maximum temperature this Saturday (26) was recorded in Maravilha, in the West, where thermometers reached 33.8 °C.

🥵 In addition to the West, municipalities in the south, Greater Florianópolis, Vale do Itajaí and northern Santa Catarina also recorded temperatures above 30°C (see the list below). In Blumenau, thermometers read 31ºC at around 3:30 pm (see list below).

Santa Catarina is one of eight states in Brazil experiencing a heat wave. Due to the forecast, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a red alert for the heat wave in the north of the state, highlighting the health risk and temperature 5 degrees above average.

Inmet's statement began at noon on Saturday (12) and runs until 6pm on Wednesday (30).

➡️ UNDERSTAND: A heat wave is a meteorological phenomenon that happens when a certain region records temperatures well above average for a sequence of days.

In general, meteorologists establish that, for the phenomenon to occur, temperatures need to be at least 5ºC above average for a period of five days or more.

Inmet defines a heat wave when there is an increase of 5ºC in temperature in relation to the monthly average, regardless of the number of days it lasts.

Weather on Sunday

On Sunday, the day still starts with firm weather, sunshine and varying cloud cover across the state. From the afternoon onwards, the weather becomes unstable again, with disturbances at different levels of the atmosphere.

In the afternoon, with the increase in cloudiness, temperatures rise less in the east of Santa Catarina, staying between 19°C and 24°C.

The Great West is still warming up and temperatures exceed 30°C, reaching 35°C in the West and Far West.
