Northwest region of São Paulo faces first heat wave of spring with risk of fires

The arrival of spring, on September 22, should bring the first heat wave, starting this Saturday (26), to municipalities in the northwest region of São Paulo and could gradually increase temperatures, with thermometers reaching the 40°C mark between Monday (28) and Tuesday (29).

The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo issued an alert regarding the high risk of fires. The regions of São José do Rio Preto and Araçatuba appear on the map of fire emergency areas until Sunday (27).

Another point of attention is the drop in relative air humidity. The index must operate well below 60%, the minimum level recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), which requires extra care with the health and hydration of the population.

Rising temperatures

According to data released by Open-Meteo, the heat gains strength over the weekend in some cities in the region. See below.

Araçatuba: On Saturday (26), the predicted maximum is 33°C. The temperature rises to 34°C on Sunday (27), reaches 36°C on Monday (28) and reaches a maximum of 38°C on Tuesday (29).

Ariranha: Saturday (26) starts with a maximum of 33°C, rising to 35°C on Sunday (27), 37°C on Monday (28) and reaching the 40°C mark on Tuesday (29).

Fire risk

With dry weather and the lack of heavy rainfall, vegetation is extremely vulnerable to the spread of fires. The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo released a warning about the possibility of fires and a map that places the northwest of São Paulo as a region at high risk for fires.

Actions that should be avoided:

Burning to clear land or trash;

Throwing cigarette butts on the sides of highways;

Release balloons or light bonfires near forested areas.

Health recommendations

Given the scenario of extreme heat and low humidity, health professionals recommend:

Constant hydration: Increase your water intake throughout the day, even without feeling thirsty;

Sun protection: Avoid direct exposure to the sun between 10am and 4pm and use sunscreen and hats;

Humidification of environments: Use air humidifiers, basins with water or wet towels in the rooms;

Physical exercise: Avoid intense physical activity outdoors during the hottest times of the day.
