Siena: seizure of a farm for gangmastering and exploitation

A non-EU worker identified by the Carabinieri of the Labor Inspectorate Unit of Siena who executed a preventive seizure issued by the investigating judge against an agricultural company, in relation to an alleged "serious" case of labor exploitation, would have worked for an average of 62 hours per week with a flat rate salary of around 800 euros, just over three per hour, per month. The three managers of the company - reports the Carabinieri - are being investigated, as alleged perpetrators, for various reasons for labor exploitation (the so-called gangmastering), serious personal injury due to negligence and ideological falsehood.

From the investigations, started in October 2025, it emerged that the worker did not appear to have taken advantage of "adequate" rest or holidays. The man and his family (including a minor) would also have resided in a dilapidated company property that had already been declared uninhabitable.

According to Nil's reconstructions, the man would have suffered two serious accidents at work between 2024 and 2025. The dynamics of these accidents would have been "maliciously altered by the suspects" - the Carabinieri believe - to evade controls, forcing the worker to provide false declarations to the health workers under the threat of dismissal and taking advantage of his alleged need to maintain his residence permit.

Under recent immigration legislation, the alleged victim and family members have been placed in a secure facility to undertake counseling.
