New Party Chairman Özgür Özel's words regarding the investigation launched against Borsa Istanbul by the then Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek in 2025 have come to the fore again. Upon detection of unusual price and quantity movements and sudden declines in the Borsa Istanbul share market as of February 1, 2025, an ex officio investigation was launched by the then Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek. The investigation into movements that could not be explained with a reasonable economic justification was carried out in coordination with the CMB, Türkiye Wealth Fund and Borsa Istanbul.

HE SAID, "A COMPLETE MIND MIND"

In his speech regarding the investigation initiated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor of the time, Akın Gürlek, Özel said, "Last Friday, he started an investigation saying 'The stock market crashed'. And the chief prosecutor's office also launched an investigation against those who made and spread news about price movements. We are faced with a complete mental lapse." Özel reacted to the investigation with the words, "They are holding the stock market to account just because the stock market crashed. It's a complete lapse of reason."

In his speech, Özel stated that the CMB is authorized to investigate the movements in the stock market and said, "If there is something in the stock market, the CMB steps in and carries out the investigation. If there is a crime, it files a criminal complaint with the prosecutor's office." Özel, who also brought up that Gürlek's wife is a senior manager at the CMB, claimed, "When it comes from Emir Tayyip Bey, he cannot even tolerate waiting for his wife's institution."

WHAT IS THE LATEST SITUATION IN THE FUND INVESTIGATION?

At the final stage of the fund investigation, CMB decided to liquidate the relevant funds on September 17, 2026. While it was announced that there were 455 thousand individual investors in the funds, Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek stated in his statement on October 6 that 85 suspects were arrested within the scope of the investigation and judicial proceedings were taken against 207 people. Stating that measures were taken against the assets of the suspects, Gürlek noted that five people made refunds to their SDIF accounts. Gürlek also underlined that compensation for investor losses will not end the investigation.
