United States and Canada in trade war, toilet paper among the products hit by new tariffs

The United States and Canada have entered into a real trade war and the consumers of both countries will pay the price. In America, in particular, according to what was reported by various media, the rush to purchase toilet paper has begun, one of the goods that will be affected by duties of 50% starting from 8 September.

After the failure of trade negotiations last weekend, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has, in fact, promised to respond to US tariffs "dollar for dollar" and announced a list of almost 900 American products that will be subject to tariffs of between 25% and 50% starting from September 8th. The paper products sector is among the hardest hit: Canada has threatened to impose duties of between 25% and 50% on "toilet paper or semi-finished tissue products". According to the World Bank, in 2024 the United States imported toilet paper worth $328 million from Canada, making the country the main exporter of this product to the United States. And large retail chains like Costco source much of their paper products in Canada.
