It will happen tonight: the new film by Nanni Moretti presented at Venice 83

The official synopsis of the film It will happen tonight encapsulates the meaning of the entire story in one question: "I'll wait for you, as long as you want. But will it happen sooner or later?"

It will happen tonight tells of a woman and a man who meet several times, but always at the wrong time. Around them moves a constellation of relationships, feelings and bonds that cross different phases of life.

The film therefore looks at love not as a simple or linear feeling, but as something that can be conditioned by time and circumstances. The protagonists look for a new opportunity and continue to believe that life can offer a different moment to make what seemed impossible happen.

The film It will happen tonight was born from the reading of Legami, a collection of short stories by Eshkol Nevo published in Italy by Feltrinelli in 2024. It is the second cinematic meeting between Moretti and the writer after Three Floors.

The director explained that he was struck by the precision with which Nevo describes relationships and the depth of feelings. Relationships, characters and even individual images were taken from the stories, then reworked to build a unique story.

“From this was born the desire to tell a love story, but a love story in which a woman and a man always meet at the wrong time,” explained Moretti.

At the center of the work It will happen tonight is the desire to believe in second chances. For Moretti, the characters are driven by the belief that there can always be a moment when things can still happen.

It will happen tonight is therefore also a film about the need to give a name to emotions. On the courage to express them, to admit that you love someone and to openly say that you love.

Filming and technical details

Filming of Succederà Tonight took place between Italy and Spain, with locations in Rome, Turin and various Spanish locations. The screenplay is signed by Nanni Moretti, Federica Pontremoli and Valia Santella.

The photography is by Francesco Di Giacomo, the editing by Clelio Benevento, the scenography by Alessandro Vannucci and the costumes by Silvia Segoloni. The music is composed by Alberto Iglesias, while the sound is entrusted to Alessandro Bianchi, Marta Billingsley and Paolo Segat.

The film is spoken in Italian, English and French and is a co-production between Italy, France and Spain.

The film It will happen tonight is included in the Venezia 83 – Competition section. The first screenings are scheduled for September 5th, with appointments for the public at 7.15pm in the Sala Grande and at 8pm at the PalaBiennale. For those accredited, screenings are scheduled for 5 September at 9am in the Sala Grande and at 11.15am in the Sala Darsena, as well as an appointment on 6 September at 11.30am at the PalaBiennale.

To Venice, therefore, Moretti brings a work built around a simple and universal question: how long do we have to wait for something to finally happen?
