Sumar demands from the PSOE the expropriation of Maricarmen's house and a housing decree

Sumar has sent a letter to the socialist part of the Government demanding that it bring to the Council of Ministers next Tuesday the housing decree and the expropriation of the house of Maricarmen, the neighbor evicted yesterday from her home in Madrid by an investment fund. Sumar sources have indicated that the Government "cannot allow the speculative interest of a vulture fund" to prevail over the general interest.

Thus, given the fund's refusal to negotiate, Sumar understands that the only path now is the expropriation of the home. The formation considers that the recovery of Maricarmen's house will also be a message to the rest of the economic actors regarding the Executive's determination to defend the right to housing. Sumar sources also insist that the Royal Housing Decree-Law has to be approved "yes or yes" in the Council of Ministers next Tuesday.

The formation wants this package to include the freezing and extension of rents; the regulation of speculative uses of housing, such as tourist apartments, seasonal homes or rooms; and the protection of families and tenants against vulture funds. Sumar has appealed to the PSOE and all parliamentary forces to rise to the situation and approve these measures.

Several Sumar ministers posted messages on their social networks early this morning defending these demands that they have directed at the socialist wing of the Government. The second vice president and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, has declared that, next Tuesday, "the Council of Ministers must approve the expropriation of Maricarmen's home and a package to freeze rents", as requested by Sumar.
