Tanzania: Ten lions found dead from suspected poisoning in Ngorongoro

Ten lions have been found dead in a suspected poisoning incident in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania, a UNESCO world heritage site. "The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) - reads a statement released yesterday evening - regretfully communicates that ten (10) lions were found dead on 18 September 2026 in the Ndutu area".

Authorities said initial findings suggest the lions died after "ingesting poison", adding that a specialist investigation was underway "to determine the cause of the incident and identify those responsible".

The Ngorongoro area is the scene of long-standing tensions between the authorities and the local nomadic community. The clashes have sometimes been lethal since the government launched a clearance program in 2022. The Tanzanian government claims that population growth is encroaching on wildlife habitat: the resident population in Ngorongoro has in fact grown from around 8,000 units in 1959 to over 100,000. Since June, at least 20 elephants have died in Kenya's Amboseli ecosystem, near the border with Tanzania, due to suspected pesticide poisoning, although authorities have been unable to establish whether the deaths were accidental or intentional.
