Storm Polo becomes category 1 hurricane, risk of escalation to category 5 over the Mexican Pacific

In Mexico, the Polo storm has become a category one hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale and, according to the models, risks quickly reaching the devastating category 5. Positioned in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the state of Guerrero, it presents strong winds. The alert remains active up to the coasts of Michoacán.

The advance of the cyclone will cause intense thunderstorms and waves of up to four metres. The National Weather Service estimates extreme rainfall on the coast. The National Water Commission warned that the rain could cause landslides, rise in river levels, as well as overflows and flooding.

For preventive purposes, the Civil Protection has suspended lessons in schools in Acapulco, Costa Chica and Costa Grande. The governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado Pineda, reiterated the importance of the measure to avoid tragedies like that of Hurricane Otis in 2023. Given the rapid intensification, the authorities invite citizens to exercise maximum caution.
