Why It Matters

State Supported Agricultural Insurance System (TARSİM) offers comprehensive coverage and premium support to producers affected by the climate crisis.

According to the information obtained by the AA correspondent from TARSİM officials, the effects of the global climate crisis on the agricultural sector remain on the agenda. For sustainable food supply, it is important that agricultural production is not interrupted and producers are financially protected.

The State Supported Agricultural Insurance System provides assurance to producers and growers with comprehensive coverage and up to 70 percent state premium support.

Within the scope of the system, as of October, 1.5 trillion liras of agricultural assets were insured, 2.4 million policies were produced, 27 million decares of land and 25.5 million cattle and sheep were insured.

While agricultural lands across the country were damaged this year due to disasters caused by climate change, the natural disaster that caused the most damage was floods.

The damages caused by agricultural frost occurred at a regional level, unlike last year.

Hail events were effective in Şanlıurfa, Adana and Mersin in May and June. Storm-related damage also occurred in these provinces. Lentils, wheat and barley products from the field crops and grain group were affected by floods, hail and storms, and peach and nectarine fruits were affected by hail. Grape and apricot products were damaged by low-intensity hail and frost.

311 thousand of the notices were from plant product and greenhouse insurance.

Damages caused by storms and hail occurred in Samsun, Yozgat, Çorum, Tokat, Kars, Edirne and Manisa in July, and floods and landslides occurred in Samsun, Çorum and Giresun in August.

In many regions of the country, the increase in corn and sunflower damage reports, especially due to the damage caused by wild animals, attracted attention.

During the summer months, damage occurred in plant products, greenhouse cultivation and beekeeping areas due to fires in Antalya, Balıkesir and Edirne.

Wild animals and birds damaged sunflower and corn products in Amasya, Çorum, Balıkesir, Tokat, Bilecik, Çanakkale and Aydın in September and October.

During this period, hail and storm-related damage was observed on citrus fruits, sunflowers and corn in Adana, Tokat and Amasya, and hail-related damage was observed on apples in Kahramanmaraş and Isparta.

During the said period, floods and landslides occurred in hazelnut fields in Samsun, Ordu and Giresun, and floods and landslides occurred in cotton in Şırnak, as well as flood and flood damage in sunflowers due to the recent rainfall.

As of October, 478 thousand damage notices were received from insured producers and breeders whose plant products, greenhouses and animals were damaged. 311 thousand of these notices were from crop product and greenhouse insurance, and the remaining 167 thousand were from animal life insurance branches.

Most damage reports came from 5 provinces

Within the scope of crop product insurance, the most damage notices were received from wheat, sunflower, barley, apricot and grape products, mainly due to hail, floods, damage caused by wild animals, frost and storm reasons. The provinces where the most reports were received were Malatya, Manisa, Diyarbakır, Amasya and Tokat.

In animal life insurance branches, notices were received mainly related to the causes of death, compulsory slaughter and baby death.

13 billion lira damage payment was made to producers

Following the receipt of damage notices, 13 billion liras were paid to the insured producers, whose plant products, animals and greenhouses were found to be damaged in the field inspections by TARSİM experts, and whose damage file procedures were subsequently completed.

In the system, damage payments in the herbal product insurance branch are made within 30 days at the latest at the end of the policy maturity determined according to the producers' own declaration. Efforts are continuing to make an additional payment of 5.4 billion lira to producers whose transactions are ongoing in the coming days.

2027 production season in agricultural insurance opened in September

In order to benefit from the supports, it is important to be registered in the Farmer Registration System (ÇKS). The new production season for 2027 production year ÇKS applications and state-supported herbal product insurance started on September 1.

In order for producers to secure their labor by obtaining agricultural insurance, they must first be registered in the relevant systems of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry or update their existing registrations.

Producers can register to ÇKS or update their existing registrations at the provincial and district directorates of the Ministry or through the e-Government portal until December 31, 2026.

Producers who want to get agricultural insurance can easily follow the current calendar regarding the latest policy acceptance dates in the crop product insurance branch, which vary according to product, risk and location, on TARSİM's corporate website. Policy issuance procedures for cattle, sheep, poultry and aquaculture life, beekeeping and silkworm insurance and greenhouse insurance continue throughout the year without any schedule.
