Heavy rains hit Thailand and flooded Bangkok

The continuous rains that started on Thursday afternoon in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, caused floods in many regions, especially in the central and eastern parts of the city. Water levels in many regions have risen to critical levels due to floods in the connecting channels of the Chao Phraya River, which passes through the middle of the capital. While many vehicles and motorcycles were flooded, it was seen that some drivers, including public buses and taxis, had to leave their vehicles on the roads.

Bangkok Metropolitan Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stated that especially the eastern parts of the city were more affected by the flood and that the canals flowing into Bangkok were full and the risk continued due to continuing rains. Chadchart asked citizens living near the canals to move their belongings to higher places and move their vehicles to higher areas. All 50 districts of the city were declared a disaster area.

PUBLIC FLOOD WARNING

Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) sent a flood warning to the mobile phones of citizens living in Bangkok via the Cell Broadcast system at 09.22 local time today. In the message, it was stated that the water level in the canals in Bangkok is critical and continues to rise, and especially those living along the canals and low-lying areas were asked to move their belongings and valuables to higher places, avoid going to traffic and check the travel situation. The message also called for contacting the relevant regional administration in case of need for assistance.

MORE THAN 84 THOUSAND PEOPLE WERE AFFECTED BY THE RAINS ACROSS THAILAND

As of today, more than 84 thousand people have been affected by floods in 21 provinces, 93 districts and 1,425 villages across Thailand. It was stated that water levels, which are at critical levels in some areas in Suphan Buri, Chachoengsao and Sa Kaeo provinces, continue to rise, while some roads in Bangkok are still under water.

IT WILL CONTINUE UNTIL TOMORROW

Thailand Meteorological Department announced that heavy rains across the country are expected to continue until Sunday. It was reported that the risk of flash floods, flood waters from forests, landslides and river floods continues due to the strengthening of the southwest monsoon and the low pressure system effective in the eastern, northeastern and central regions.

Authorities called on citizens to follow official warnings, stay away from risky areas and move to safe areas without delay if an evacuation order is given.
