Trabzon New Airport Project: 6 Thousand Meters of Breakwater, 97 Million Tons of Sea Embankment and 45.65 Billion Liras of Investment are Planned

According to the EIA file, approximately 6 thousand meters long protective breakwater and 97 million tons of sea embankment will be built within the scope of the project.

Within the scope of the project, it is also planned to build a 110 thousand square meter terminal building, a 30 thousand square meter indoor parking lot with a capacity of 1250 vehicles, and a 35 thousand square meter technical block, tower and support buildings.

13 MILLION TONS OF EXCAVATION

Approximately 13 million tons of excavation is planned to be carried out in order to bring the elevation of the current airport to the level of the sea embankment. Sea filling operations are planned to be carried out from land to sea.

The project is planned to start in 2026 and after a construction period of approximately 7 years, it will be put into operation in 2033 and operated for 30 years. The investment cost of the project is calculated as 45 billion 650 million lira.

The EIA file for the project included the assessment that the passenger capacity and terminal areas of the existing Trabzon Airport fall behind international standards. In this context, it was stated that the usable area per passenger in the existing terminals remained below the minimum levels specified in international standards. It was reported that the new airport will be designed in accordance with ICAO and international standards.

It was stated that 3 million 873 thousand 979 passengers were served at Trabzon Airport in 2025, and 26 thousand 507 aircraft traffic and 38 thousand 16 tons of freight traffic occurred at the airport in the same year.

In the EIA file, it was stated that Trabzon Airport has increasing passenger traffic, especially during the tourism season, and that flights are mainly directed to domestic hubs and Middle Eastern countries. It was noted in the file that the new airport was planned to be suitable for the use of medium and large-bodied passenger aircraft and cargo aircraft.

MAJOR PART OF THE PROJECT AREA IS ON THE SEA

The project site is located approximately 7 kilometers north of Trabzon city center. The area is located adjacent to Pelitli and Konaklar neighborhoods in Ortahisar district.

Most of the project area will be created on sea fill. In the EIA file, it was stated that the area consists of sea areas under the rule and possession of the state and immovable properties owned by the Treasury. There are 100. Yıl Fishing Shelter, Trabzon Marina, Trabzon Port and Faroz Port in the west of the project site, and Yomra Port in the east.

Studies determined that there were 66 plant, 4 frog, 10 reptile, 167 bird and 37 mammal species in the region.
