Three workers rescued from conditions similar to slavery on a farm in Pará

Three rural workers subjected to conditions similar to slavery were rescued on a farm in the rural area of ​​São Félix do Xingu, in the south of Pará. The inspection, carried out between the 17th and 26th of August, found the workers sleeping outside the main house, in a wooden structure with a dirt floor and no side protection against the entry of insects and animals.

According to inspectors, the space where the workers slept did not offer protection against venomous or large animals. There were also no adequate cabinets to store personal belongings and supplies, nor a refrigerator to store food.

The sanitary facilities were deteriorated and unusable. According to the inspection, the set of irregularities compromised minimum health, hygiene and dignity conditions and characterized the submission of workers to degrading working conditions.

The inspection was part of Operation Rescue VI, aimed at combating work similar to slavery and human trafficking. In Pará, the action brought together the Public Ministry of Labor in Pará and Amapá (MPT PA-AP), the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) and the Federal Public Defender's Office (DPU).

After the rescue, the three workers were welcomed and cared for by the São Félix do Xingu socio-assistance protection network. After the treatment, they returned to their hometowns.

The same operation also found labor violations in Conceição do Araguaia and São Geraldo do Araguaia. According to information released about the action, employers signed Conduct Adjustment Terms (TACs) to regularize the identified situations.
