Right-wing influencer Simone Carabella provokes the mosque dispute in Venice

Right-wing influencer Simone Carabella traveled to Venice to protest against the planned construction of a mosque for Bangladeshi migrants. He filmed the Friday prayer outdoors, ate a ham sandwich next to the prayer leader and triggered an escalation in which the police brought him to safety from an angry crowd. The dispute over the mosque shows the current culture war in Italy over migration and Islam, while the Bangladeshi community financed the construction and is now being thwarted by the new city government led by Simone Venturini, which is demanding a change to the development plan. Prince Howlader, chairman of the “Giovani per l’umanità” association, is threatening a strike if construction is prevented.

US negotiators Witkoff and Kushner meet Zelensky in Kiev – no breakthrough in the Ukraine war

US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner spoke with President Zelensky in Kiev, but made no immediate progress in the Ukraine war. Zelensky expressed little optimism and called for a "winter package" if the conflict lasts until winter. The talks followed a meeting with Putin in Moscow at which a three-day ceasefire on Kiev was agreed. Despite U.S. diplomatic efforts, the war is currently headed toward escalation, with intense air and naval warfare on the front lines.

Short-term ceasefire in Kyiv after visit by Trump's emissaries

After Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff's visit to Moscow and Kiev, there was temporary calm in the Ukrainian capital on Saturday evening as Putin ordered a halt to attacks on Kiev until Monday. However, the ceasefire only applies to Kiev, while attacks continued on other Ukrainian cities such as Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro and Kharkiv. The negotiations are intended to serve Putin's military goals and are running parallel to further attacks.

American companies are boycotting the Franco-German space summit in Paris

Under pressure from US President Donald Trump, SpaceX, Blue Origin, Stoke Space and Starcloud have canceled their participation in the international space summit in Paris. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu warned of dark clouds over European space policy and emphasized sovereignty and access to space. The summit takes place in the Grand Palais, China is represented at a high level, while Russia, North Korea and Iran were not invited. The EU is planning an action plan to protect satellites and other space assets called European Space Shield in response to hybrid Russian attacks. Chancellor Friedrich Merz canceled his participation due to scheduling difficulties; Space Minister Dorothee Bär is replacing him. An agreement is signed between Dassault and OHB for the Vortex-S reusable multi-purpose spaceplane for ESA. Europe is lagging behind America and China in the race for reusable launch vehicles and needs to pick up the pace. The German position is perceived as fickle as Berlin blocks a European preference clause for EU-subsidized space programs.
